Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe.It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom.So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools, or you will become as foolish as they are.Be sure to answer the foolish arguments of fools, or they will become wise in their own estimation.

The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, heard all this and scoffed at him.

When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said,“ We want to hear more about this later.”

But the people were silent and did not utter a word because Hezekiah had commanded them,“ Do not answer him.”

He also had a debate with some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers. When he told them about Jesus and his resurrection, they said,“ What’s this babbler trying to say with these strange ideas he’s picked up?” Others said,“ He seems to be preaching about some foreign gods.”

The people said,“ Now we know you are possessed by a demon. Even Abraham and the prophets died, but you say,‘ Anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!’

Some said,“ He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?”

But when some of the Jews saw the crowds, they were jealous; so they slandered Paul and argued against whatever he said.Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and declared,“ It was necessary that we first preach the word of God to you Jews. But since you have rejected it and judged yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we will offer it to the Gentiles.

“ Why, that’s very strange!” the man replied.“ He healed my eyes, and yet you don’t know where he comes from?We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.Ever since the world began, no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind.If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.”“ You were born a total sinner!” they answered.“ Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw him out of the synagogue.

And after they had argued back and forth among themselves, they left with this final word from Paul:“ The Holy Spirit was right when he said to your ancestors through Isaiah the prophet,‘ Go and say to this people: When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes— so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.’So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it.”

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked,“ Are you saying we’re blind?”

Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you claim to be so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are honored, but we are ridiculed.Even now we go hungry and thirsty, and we don’t have enough clothes to keep warm. We are often beaten and have no home.We work wearily with our own hands to earn our living. We bless those who curse us. We are patient with those who abuse us.We appeal gently when evil things are said about us. Yet we are treated like the world’s garbage, like everybody’s trash— right up to the present moment.
