Rich people rule over those who are poor. Borrowers are slaves to lenders.

The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.

Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,

One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and one who gives gifts to the rich— both come to poverty.

But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?

Still others were saying,“ We have had to borrow money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”

Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha,“ Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you.

You levy a straw tax on the poor and impose a tax on their grain. it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.

Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.
