One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and one who gives gifts to the rich— both come to poverty.

You might treat poor people badly or give gifts to rich people. Trying to get rich in these ways will instead make you poor.

Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.

A person who gets ahead by oppressing the poor or by showering gifts on the rich will end in poverty.

For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.

Come now, you rich people, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth eaten.Your gold and your silver have corroded, and their corrosion will serve as a testimony against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of armies.You have lived for pleasure on the earth and lived luxuriously; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

A person with an evil eye hurries after wealth And does not know that poverty will come upon him.

“ This is what the Lord of armies has said:‘ Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother;and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.’But they refused to pay attention, and turned a stubborn shoulder and plugged their ears from hearing.They also made their hearts as hard as a diamond so that they could not hear the Law and the words which the Lord of armies had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets; therefore great wrath came from the Lord of armies.And just as He called and they would not listen, so they called and I would not listen,” says the Lord of armies;“ but I scattered them with a storm wind among all the nations whom they did not know. So the land was desolated behind them so that no one went back and forth, since they made the pleasant land desolate.”

And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.But love your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil people.

They covet fields, so they seize them; And houses, so they take them. They exploit a man and his house, A person and his inheritance.Therefore this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, I am planning against this family a catastrophe From which you cannot remove your necks; And you will not walk haughtily, For it will be an evil time.

For he has oppressed and neglected the poor; He has seized a house which he has not built.“ Because he knew no quiet within him, He does not retain anything he desires.Nothing remains for him to devour, Therefore his prosperity does not endure.In the fullness of his excess he will be cramped; The hand of everyone who suffers will come against him.When he fills his belly, God will send His fierce anger on him And rain it on him while he is eating.He may flee from the iron weapon, But the bronze bow will pierce him.It is drawn and comes out of his back, Even the flashing point from his gallbladder; Terrors come upon him,Complete darkness is held in reserve for his treasures, And unfanned fire will devour him; It will consume the survivor in his tent.The heavens will reveal his guilt, And the earth will rise up against him.The increase of his house will disappear; His possessions will flow away on the day of His anger.This is a wicked person’s portion from God, The inheritance decreed to him by God.”

A poor man who oppresses the helpless Is like a driving rain which leaves no food.

And he cried out and said,‘ Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’

One who oppresses the poor taunts his Maker, But one who is gracious to the needy honors Him.

Now He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him,“ Whenever you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor wealthy neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you to a meal in return, and that will be your repayment.But whenever you give a banquet, invite people who are poor, who have disabilities, who are limping, and people who are blind;and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
