Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Where there is arguing, there is pride. But those who take advice are wise.

By insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom.

Arrogance leads to nothing but strife, but wisdom is gained by those who take advice.

Through overconfidence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel.

By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.

By pride cometh only contention; But with the well- advised is wisdom.

Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is with people who take advice.

But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you?

Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions.

Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so stop before a dispute breaks out.

Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others.A fool is quick tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.

Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them.

Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life.

“ But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you.They would say,‘ There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’“ Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him?And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away.

When all Israel realized that the king had refused to listen to them, they responded,“ Down with the dynasty of David! We have no interest in the son of Jesse. Back to your homes, O Israel! Look out for your own house, O David!” So the people of Israel returned home.

In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said,“ It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to themand will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. (niv)

The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah,“ Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”Jephthah answered,“ I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands.When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?”Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said,“ You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.”The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said,“ Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead asked him,“ Are you an Ephraimite?” If he replied,“ No,”they said,“ All right, say‘ Shibboleth.’” If he said,“ Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time. (niv)

do not bring hastily to court, for what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame? (niv)

The young men who had grown up with him replied,“ These people have said to you,‘ Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them,‘ My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?” And they challenged him vigorously.But he answered them,“ What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t the gleanings of Ephraim’s grapes better than the full grape harvest of Abiezer?God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the Midianite leaders, into your hands. What was I able to do compared to you?” At this, their resentment against him subsided. (niv)

The proud and arrogant person—“ Mocker” is his name— behaves with insolent fury. (niv)

Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us?But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:“ God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (niv)

Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance. (niv)
