Where do the conflicts and where do the quarrels among you come from? Is it not from this, from your passions that battle inside you?

Starting a quarrel is like letting out water; stop it before strife breaks out!

The way of a fool is right in his own opinion, but the one who listens to advice is wise.A fool’s annoyance is known at once, but the prudent overlooks an insult.

A dispute also started among them over which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

Listen to advice and receive discipline, that you may become wise by the end of your life.

For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t sit down first and compute the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish the tower, all who see it will begin to make fun of him.They will say,‘ This man began to build and was not able to finish!’Or what king, going out to confront another king in battle, will not sit down first and determine whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?If he cannot succeed, he will send a representative while the other is still a long way off and ask for terms of peace.

The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah,“ Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”Jephthah answered,“ I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands.When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?”Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said,“ You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.”The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said,“ Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead asked him,“ Are you an Ephraimite?” If he replied,“ No,”they said,“ All right, say‘ Shibboleth.’” If he said,“ Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time. (niv)

do not bring hastily to court, for what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame? (niv)

The proud and arrogant person—“ Mocker” is his name— behaves with insolent fury. (niv)

Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us?But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:“ God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (niv)

Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance. (niv)
