於是埃及人設立了苦工頭目來轄制他們，用重擔苦害他們；他們就為法老建造貯藏城、比東和蘭塞。但是越發苦害他們，他們倒越發繁多，越發突破限量而發達；埃及人就因以色列人的緣故而鬧恐慌。埃及人嚴嚴地使以色列人作工：用很難作的苦工：像和灰泥、作磚，作田間各樣的工：就是埃及人嚴嚴叫他們去作的各樣苦工，使他們的生活逕是苦味。

埃及王對她們說：『你們給希伯來婦人接生看他們臨盆的時候：若是男兒，就讓他死；若是女兒，她就可以活着。』

以色列人的頭目、就是法老的督工所設立來管理眾民的、受責打說：『你們昨天今天為甚麼沒有作完你們受派的工去作磚、像素常一樣呢？』

這個王用詭計待我們的民族，苦害我們的祖宗，強令他們丟棄嬰兒，不讓存活。
