有人告诉大卫说：“看哪，非利士人攻击基伊拉，抢夺禾场。”大卫求问耶和华说：“我可以去吗？我可以去攻打那些非利士人吗？”耶和华对大卫说：“你可以去攻打非利士人，拯救基伊拉。”大卫的人对他说：“看哪，我们在犹大这里尚且惧怕，何况到基伊拉去攻打非利士人的军队呢？”大卫又再求问耶和华，耶和华回答说：“你起身下基伊拉去，我必将非利士人交在你手里。”于是大卫和他的人往基伊拉去，与非利士人打仗，大大击败他们，夺取他们的牲畜。这样，大卫救了基伊拉的居民。亚希米勒的儿子亚比亚他逃往基伊拉到大卫那里的时候，手里拿着以弗得。有人告诉扫罗，大卫到了基伊拉。扫罗说：“神将他交在我手里了，因为他进了有门有闩的城，把自己关起来了。”于是扫罗召集众百姓，要下去攻打基伊拉，围困大卫和他的人。大卫知道扫罗设计陷害他，就对亚比亚他祭司说：“把以弗得拿过来。”大卫说：“耶和华—以色列的神啊，你仆人确实听见扫罗设法要到基伊拉来，为我的缘故毁灭这城。基伊拉人会把我交在扫罗手里吗？扫罗会下来，正如你仆人所听见的吗？耶和华—以色列的神啊，求你指示仆人！”耶和华说：“他会下来。”大卫又说：“基伊拉人会把我和我的人交在扫罗手里吗？”耶和华说：“他们会交出来。”于是大卫和他的人约有六百名起身离开基伊拉，往他们所能去的地方去。有人告诉扫罗，大卫离开基伊拉逃走了，扫罗就停止出发了。

其中有二万四千人管理耶和华殿的事务，有六千人作官长和审判官，
