王必回答他們說：「我實在告訴你們，這些事你們既作在我這些弟兄中最小之一個的身上，就是作在我身上了。」

任憑他們咒罵吧；惟願你祝福；願那起來攻擊我的蒙羞愧；願你的僕人得歡喜。

那時摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒起來對以色列人爭戰；他打發人將比珥的兒子巴蘭召了來咒詛你們。我不情願聽巴蘭；他倒連連給你們祝起福來；這樣，我便援救了你們脫離巴勒的手。

巴蘭便發表言論歌來、說：『巴勒啊，提起神來聽吧；西撥的兒子啊，側耳聽我吧；

摩押人極其懼怕以色列民、因為他們眾多；摩押人對以色列人真是憎厭了。摩押人對米甸的長老說：『現在這一集團要把我們四圍所有的一概餂盡、就像牛餂盡田野的青草一般。』那時西撥的兒子巴勒做摩押王；他就差遣使者到比珥的兒子巴蘭那裏、到大河邊的毘奪、亞捫人之地那裏、去請巴蘭來，說：『看哪，有一族從埃及出來，遮滿了地面，也住在我的對面。這族比我強盛，現在求你來、為我咒詛這族，或者我能擊勝他們，能把他們趕出此地；因為我知道你給誰祝福，誰就得祝福，你咒詛誰，誰就受咒詛。』摩押的長老和米甸的長老手裏拿着占卜禮金，就起身，到了巴蘭那裏，將巴勒的話都告訴了他。巴蘭對他們說：『今夜你們且在這裏過夜，我要照永恆主告訴我的話回報你們』；摩押的首領就在巴蘭那裏過夜。上帝來找巴蘭說：『在你這裏的那些人是誰？』巴蘭對上帝說：『是摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒，他差遣人到我這裏來、說：「看哪，有一族從埃及出來的、遮滿了地面；現在求你來、為我咒詛他們，或者我能戰勝他們，把他們趕出去。」』

雅各啊，你的帳棚何等的佳美；以色列啊，你的帳幕何其華麗！綿延像谿谷，像河旁的園子，像永恆主所栽的沉香樹，像水邊的香柏木。必有水從他的桶裏流出，他的膀臂必管理多族之民；他的王必高過亞甲，他的王權必被捧起來。領他出埃及的上帝有像野牛高舉的角；他要吞喫做他敵人的列國，折斷他們的骨頭，擊碎他們的腰。他屈身躺着像公獅、像母獅；誰敢惹他呢？凡給你祝福的、願他蒙祝福，凡咒詛你的、願他受咒詛。』巴勒向巴蘭發怒，就拍起掌來；對巴蘭說：『我請你來咒詛我的仇敵；你看，你竟全給他們祝福了這三次呢。

上帝沒有咒詛的、我哪能咒詛呢？永恆主沒有怒罵的、我哪能怒罵呢？我從巖頂看他，從山上望他；啊，這是一族獨居之民、不自數列於萬國中的！誰能數點雅各的塵土？誰能計算以色列之人煙呢？我願如正直人之死而死；願我之終就如正直人之終。』巴勒對巴蘭說：『你待我的是怎麼回事呢？我領你來咒詛我的仇敵；你看，你竟全給他們祝福了！』
