那些人來對耶穌說：「老師，我們知道你是真誠的。你不顧忌任何人，因為你不看人的情面，而是按真理教導神的道。請問，向凱撒納稅，可以不可以呢？我們該交還是不該交呢？」

第二天，他們從山上下來，有一大群人迎著耶穌而來。這時候，忽然人群中有一個人呼喊說：「老師，求求你看顧我的兒子吧！因為他是我的獨生兒子。你看，邪靈抓住他，忽然喊叫起來，又使他抽瘋，口吐白沫；邪靈折磨著他，就是不離開。我求過你的門徒們，要他們驅趕那邪靈，可是他們不能。」耶穌回答說：「唉，這個不信、歪曲的世代！我還要和你們在一起多久呢？我還要容忍你們多久呢？把你的兒子帶到這裡來吧！」那孩子上前來的時候，鬼魔把他摔倒，使他劇烈地抽瘋。耶穌就斥責那汙靈，使孩子痊癒，把孩子交給他父親。

他們來到眾人那裡，有一個人來到耶穌面前，跪下來，說：「主啊，可憐我的兒子吧！他患了癲癇病，十分痛苦，經常跌進火裡，也經常跌進水裡。我帶他到你的門徒們那裡，可是他們不能使他痊癒。」耶穌回答說：「唉，這個不信、歪曲的世代！我還要與你們在一起多久呢？我還要容忍你們多久呢？把孩子帶到我這裡來吧！」耶穌斥責那鬼魔，鬼魔就從孩子身上出來；從那一刻起，孩子就痊癒了。門徒們悄悄地前來問耶穌：「我們為什麼不能趕出那鬼魔呢？」耶穌回答說：「因為你們小信。我確實地告訴你們：如果你們有像一粒芥菜種子那樣的信仰，就是對這座山說『從這裡移到那裡！』它也將移開；而且在你們，將沒有不可能的事。

耶穌從那裡出來，法利賽人和經文士們就開始激烈地敵視他，還盤問他許多問題，暗中等機會，要從他的口中抓住把柄。

可是，有一些經文士坐在那裡，心裡想：

其實，你們應當仔細地思想耶穌如何忍受了罪人的頂撞，這樣你們心裡就不會因喪氣而疲倦。
