你們要當心，免得有人用哲學和虛空的妄言把你們擄去；那些是出於人的傳統，出於世界的原則，而不是出於基督。

因為你們知道，你們被救贖，脫離祖先所傳下來的虛妄行為，不是憑著會朽壞的東西，如銀子或金子，

他們敬拜我也是徒然的，因為他們把人的規條當做教義教導人。』你們離棄了神的命令，而拘守人的傳統。」耶穌又對他們說：「你們為了要守住你們的傳統，竟然棄絕了神的命令！摩西吩咐過『你要孝敬你的父母』，又說『咒罵父親或母親的人，必須處死。』

「不可碰，不可嘗，不可摸」之類的條例呢？這些東西都是一經使用就要衰朽的，是出於人的規條和教義；它們雖然藉著自造宗教、謙卑低微、苦待身體，外表有智慧，但在對付放任肉體的事上，沒有任何價值。

「你的門徒們為什麼違犯古人的傳統呢？他們吃飯的時候不洗手！」耶穌回答他們，說：「你們為什麼為了你們的傳統而違犯神的命令呢？神吩咐過『你要孝敬你的父母』，又說『咒罵父親或母親的人，必須處死。』你們卻說『如果有人對父親或母親說：我本該給你的已經做了聖殿奉獻，他就可以完全不孝敬父母。』這樣，為了你們的傳統，你們就廢棄了神的話語。

於是，法利賽人和經文士就問耶穌：「你的門徒們為什麼不照著古人的傳統行事，用不潔淨的手吃飯呢？」
