The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer:‘ I thank you, God, that I am not like other people— cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector!

But the people were displeased.“ He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

Yet they say to each other,‘ Don’t come too close or you will defile me! I am holier than you!’ These people are a stench in my nostrils, an acrid smell that never goes away.

This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people— even eating with them!So Jesus told them this story:“ If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it?And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders.When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying,‘ Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!

But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples,“ Why does your teacher eat with such scum?”

Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others.

Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.

“ What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”

For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector.
