Again and again they hit him on the head with a stick. They spit on him. They fell on their knees and pretended to honor him.

And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.

Therefore they told Haman about it to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would be tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor, he was enraged.

This is what the Lord says— the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel— to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers:“ Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.

Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel— all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
