法利賽人聽見耶穌使撒都該人無話可說，就聚集在一起。他們中間有一個律法家，試探耶穌說：“老師，律法中哪一條誡命是最重要的呢？”他回答：“你要全心、全性、全意愛主你的神。這是最重要的第一條誡命。第二條也和它相似，就是要愛人如己。全部律法和先知書，都以這兩條誡命作為根據。”

有一個律法師起來試探耶穌，說：“老師，我應該作甚麼，才可以承受永生呢？”耶穌對他說：“律法上寫的是甚麼？你怎麼念的呢？”他回答：“你要全心、全性、全力、全意愛主你的神，並且要愛鄰舍如同自己。”耶穌說：“你答得對，你這樣行，就必得生命。”

經學家中有幾個說：“老師，你說得好。”

因此，無論誰廢除誡命中最小的一條，又這樣教導人，他在天國中必稱為最小的；但若有人遵行這些誡命，並且教導人遵行，他在天國中必稱為大。

他問：“甚麼誡命？”耶穌回答：“就是‘不可殺人，不可姦淫，不可偷盜，不可作假證供；

“虛偽的經學家和法利賽人哪，你們有禍了！你們把薄荷、茴香、芹菜，獻上十分之一，卻忽略律法上更重要的，就如正義、憐憫和信實；這些更重要的是你們應當作的，但其他的也不可忽略。

然而你們法利賽人有禍了！因為你們把薄荷、茴香和各樣菜蔬獻上十分之一，卻把公義和愛神的事疏忽了；這些是你們應當作的，但其他的也不可疏忽。
