这件事应验了先知所说的：“要对锡安的居民﹙“居民”原文作“女子”。﹚说：‘看哪，你的王来到你这里了；他是温柔的，他骑着驴，骑的是小驴。’”

锡安的居民哪！要大大喜乐。耶路撒冷的居民（“居民”原文作“女子”）哪！应当欢呼。看哪！你的王来到你这里了，他是公义的，是得胜的。他又是温柔的，他骑着驴，骑的是小驴。

牵了驴和小驴来，把衣服搭在它们上面，耶稣就骑上。有一大群人把自己的衣服铺在路上，也有人从树上把树枝砍下来，铺在路上。

第二天，有一大群上来过节的人，听见耶稣要来耶路撒冷，就拿着棕树枝出去迎接他，欢呼说：“和散那，奉主名来的以色列王，是应当称颂的！”耶稣找到一头小驴，就骑在上面，正如经上所记的：“锡安的居民哪，不要惧怕；看哪，你的王来了，他骑着小驴来了。”门徒起初不明白这些事，可是到耶稣得了荣耀以后，他们才想起这些话是指着他说的，并且人们果然向他这样行了。

他们就急忙把自己的衣服放在他脚下的上层（“上层”原文意思不详，或译：“没有装饰的”）台阶上，然后吹响号角宣告：“耶户作王了。”
