And this was his message:“ After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

Here is what John was preaching.“ After me, there is someone coming who is more powerful than I am. I’m not good enough to bend down and untie his sandals.

And he preached, saying,“ After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

John announced:“ Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am— so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals.

He proclaimed,“ One who is more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.

And he was preaching, saying,“ After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to bend down and untie the straps of His sandals.

And he preached, saying,“ There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.

And he preached, saying, There cometh after me he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

He was preaching:“ Someone more powerful than I will come after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals.

And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

He proclaimed,“ One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.

He preached, saying,“ After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loosen.

As John was completing his work, he said:‘ Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’ (niv)

He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” (niv)

John answered them all,“ I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (niv)

“ I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (niv)

But John tried to deter him, saying,“ I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” (niv)

So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him:“ Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. (niv)

You yourselves can testify that I said,‘ I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.He must become greater; I must become less.”The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. (niv)
