If they want fields or houses, they take them. They cheat people out of their homes. They rob them of their property.

When you want a piece of land, you find a way to seize it. When you want someone’s house, you take it by fraud and violence. You cheat a man of his property, stealing his family’s inheritance.

In you are people who accept bribes to shed blood; you take interest and make a profit from the poor. You extort unjust gain from your neighbors. And you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign Lord.

“ if my land cries out against me and all its furrows are wet with tears,

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

“ So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the Lord Almighty.

‘ Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons, declares the Lord, and I will surely make you pay for it on this plot of ground, declares the Lord.’ Now then, pick him up and throw him on that plot, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”

“ You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Ahab said to Naboth,“ Let me have your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give you a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth.”But Naboth replied,“ The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my ancestors.”So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said,“ I will not give you the inheritance of my ancestors.” He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat.His wife Jezebel came in and asked him,“ Why are you so sullen? Why won’t you eat?”He answered her,“ Because I said to Naboth the Jezreelite,‘ Sell me your vineyard; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place.’ But he said,‘ I will not give you my vineyard.’”Jezebel his wife said,“ Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth’s city with him.In those letters she wrote:“ Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people.But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them bring charges that he has cursed both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.”So the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth’s city did as Jezebel directed in the letters she had written to them.They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people.Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying,“ Naboth has cursed both God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.Then they sent word to Jezebel:“ Naboth has been stoned to death.”As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab,“ Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead.”When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of Naboth’s vineyard.Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite:“ Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth’s vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it.Say to him,‘ This is what the Lord says: Have you not murdered a man and seized his property?’ Then say to him,‘ This is what the Lord says: In the place where dogs licked up Naboth’s blood, dogs will lick up your blood— yes, yours!’”

Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these things, I will make it right.”“ You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied.“ You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

indeed, wine betrays him; he is arrogant and never at rest. Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied, he gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples.“ Will not all of them taunt him with ridicule and scorn, saying,“‘ Woe to him who piles up stolen goods and makes himself wealthy by extortion! How long must this go on?’Will not your creditors suddenly arise? Will they not wake up and make you tremble? Then you will become their prey.Because you have plundered many nations, the peoples who are left will plunder you. For you have shed human blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.“ Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, setting his nest on high to escape the clutches of ruin!

Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their fellow Jews.Some were saying,“ We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain.”Others were saying,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine.”Still others were saying,“ We have had to borrow money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”

He oppresses the poor and needy. He commits robbery. He does not return what he took in pledge. He looks to the idols. He does detestable things.

There are those who move boundary stones; they pasture flocks they have stolen.They drive away the orphan’s donkey and take the widow’s ox in pledge.They thrust the needy from the path and force all the poor of the land into hiding.Like wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go about their labor of foraging food; the wasteland provides food for their children.They gather fodder in the fields and glean in the vineyards of the wicked.Lacking clothes, they spend the night naked; they have nothing to cover themselves in the cold.They are drenched by mountain rains and hug the rocks for lack of shelter.The fatherless child is snatched from the breast; the infant of the poor is seized for a debt.Lacking clothes, they go about naked; they carry the sheaves, but still go hungry.They crush olives among the terraces; they tread the winepresses, yet suffer thirst.The groans of the dying rise from the city, and the souls of the wounded cry out for help. But God charges no one with wrongdoing.

Hear this, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is right;

“ Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.

“ Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.“ Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless.If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.
