They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. They defraud people of their homes, they rob them of their inheritance.

If they want fields or houses, they take them. They cheat people out of their homes. They rob them of their property.

When you want a piece of land, you find a way to seize it. When you want someone’s house, you take it by fraud and violence. You cheat a man of his property, stealing his family’s inheritance.

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

“ Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

‘ As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons— declares the Lord— I will repay you on this plot of ground.’ Now therefore take him up and throw him on the plot of ground, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”

“ You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

And after this Ahab said to Naboth,“ Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near my house, and I will give you a better vineyard for it; or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its value in money.”But Naboth said to Ahab,“ The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.”And Ahab went into his house vexed and sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said to him, for he had said,“ I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and would eat no food.But Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him,“ Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food?”And he said to her,“ Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him,‘ Give me your vineyard for money, or else, if it please you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered,‘ I will not give you my vineyard.’”And Jezebel his wife said to him,“ Do you now govern Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the leaders who lived with Naboth in his city.And she wrote in the letters,“ Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people.And set two worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying,‘ You have cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”And the men of his city, the elders and the leaders who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters that she had sent to them,they proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people.And the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him. And the worthless men brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying,“ Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones.Then they sent to Jezebel, saying,“ Naboth has been stoned; he is dead.”As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab,“ Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead.”And as soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,“ Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone to take possession.And you shall say to him,‘ Thus says the Lord,“ Have you killed and also taken possession?”’ And you shall say to him,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood.”’”

Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testify against me and I will restore it to you.”They said,“ You have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man’s hand.”

“ Moreover, wine is a traitor, an arrogant man who is never at rest. His greed is as wide as Sheol; like death he has never enough. He gathers for himself all nations and collects as his own all peoples.”Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,“ Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own— for how long?— and loads himself with pledges!”Will not your debtors suddenly arise, and those awake who will make you tremble? Then you will be spoil for them.Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.“ Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be safe from the reach of harm!

Now there arose a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers.For there were those who said,“ With our sons and our daughters, we are many. So let us get grain, that we may eat and keep alive.”There were also those who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses to get grain because of the famine.”And there were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children are as their children. Yet we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but it is not in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.”

Some move landmarks; they seize flocks and pasture them.They drive away the donkey of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.They thrust the poor off the road; the poor of the earth all hide themselves.Behold, like wild donkeys in the desert the poor go out to their toil, seeking game; the wasteland yields food for their children.They gather their fodder in the field, and they glean the vineyard of the wicked man.They lie all night naked, without clothing, and have no covering in the cold.They are wet with the rain of the mountains and cling to the rock for lack of shelter.( There are those who snatch the fatherless child from the breast, and they take a pledge against the poor.)They go about naked, without clothing; hungry, they carry the sheaves;among the olive rows of the wicked they make oil; they tread the winepresses, but suffer thirst.From out of the city the dying groan, and the soul of the wounded cries for help; yet God charges no one with wrong.

Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who detest justice and make crooked all that is straight,

“ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.

“ You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry,and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.
