Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said,“ Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

And in that day the Lord GOD of hosts Called for weeping and for mourning, For baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.And they talked together of all these things which had happened.So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them.But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.And He said to them,“ What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him,“ Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”And He said to them,“ What things?” So they said to Him,“ The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.

“ Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish.Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them,but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.“ And at midnight a cry was heard:‘ Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.And the foolish said to the wise,‘ Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’But the wise answered, saying,‘ No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.

Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

She shall be brought to the King in robes of many colors; The virgins, her companions who follow her, shall be brought to You.With gladness and rejoicing they shall be brought; They shall enter the King’s palace.

But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.Then Samson said to them,“ Let me pose a riddle to you. If you can correctly solve and explain it to me within the seven days of the feast, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.But if you cannot explain it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.” And they said to him,“ Pose your riddle, that we may hear it.”So he said to them:“ Out of the eater came something to eat, And out of the strong came something sweet.” Now for three days they could not explain the riddle.But it came to pass on the seventh day that they said to Samson’s wife,“ Entice your husband, that he may explain the riddle to us, or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us in order to take what is ours? Is that not so?”Then Samson’s wife wept on him, and said,“ You only hate me! You do not love me! You have posed a riddle to the sons of my people, but you have not explained it to me.” And he said to her,“ Look, I have not explained it to my father or my mother; so should I explain it to you?”Now she had wept on him the seven days while their feast lasted. And it happened on the seventh day that he told her, because she pressed him so much. Then she explained the riddle to the sons of her people.So the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down:“ What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” And he said to them:“ If you had not plowed with my heifer, You would not have solved my riddle!”Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. So his anger was aroused, and he went back up to his father’s house.And Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man.

Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,

in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness—
