那時，約翰的門徒來見耶穌，說：「我們和法利賽人常常禁食，你的門徒卻不禁食，這是為甚麼呢？」

隨後，約翰的門徒們前來問耶穌：「為什麼我們和法利賽人經常禁食，而你的門徒們卻不禁食呢？」

時、約翰之門徒至、曰、我與法利賽人數禁食、惟爾門徒不禁食、何也、

約翰之門徒就耶穌曰、我與𠵽唎㘔人、往往禁食、惟爾門徒不禁食、何也、

時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”

Then John’s disciples came to Jesus and asked,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

當下，約翰的門徒和法利賽人禁食。他們來問耶穌說：「約翰的門徒和法利賽人的門徒禁食，你的門徒倒不禁食，這是為甚麼呢？」耶穌對他們說：「新郎和陪伴之人同在的時候，陪伴之人豈能禁食呢？新郎還同在，他們不能禁食。但日子將到，新郎要離開他們，那日他們就要禁食。沒有人把新布縫在舊衣服上，恐怕所補上的新布帶壞了舊衣服，破的就更大了。也沒有人把新酒裝在舊皮袋裏，恐怕酒把皮袋裂開，酒和皮袋就都壞了；惟把新酒裝在新皮袋裏。」

他們說：「約翰的門徒屢次禁食祈禱，法利賽人的門徒也是這樣；惟獨你的門徒又吃又喝。」耶穌對他們說：「新郎和陪伴之人同在的時候，豈能叫陪伴之人禁食呢？但日子將到，新郎要離開他們，那日他們就要禁食了。」耶穌又設一個比喻，對他們說：「沒有人把新衣服撕下一塊來補在舊衣服上；若是這樣，就把新的撕破了，並且所撕下來的那塊新的和舊的也不相稱。也沒有人把新酒裝在舊皮袋裏；若是這樣，新酒必將皮袋裂開，酒便漏出來，皮袋也就壞了。但新酒必須裝在新皮袋裏。沒有人喝了陳酒又想喝新的；他總說陳的好。」

「你們禁食的時候，不可像那假冒為善的人，臉上帶着愁容；因為他們把臉弄得難看，故意叫人看出他們是禁食。我實在告訴你們，他們已經得了他們的賞賜。

約翰來了，也不吃也不喝，人就說他是被鬼附着的；人子來了，也吃也喝，人又說他是貪食好酒的人，是稅吏和罪人的朋友。但智慧之子總以智慧為是。」

耶穌向那些仗着自己是義人，藐視別人的，設一個比喻，說：「有兩個人上殿裏去禱告：一個是法利賽人，一個是稅吏。法利賽人站着，自言自語地禱告說：『神啊，我感謝你，我不像別人勒索、不義、姦淫，也不像這個稅吏。我一個禮拜禁食兩次，凡我所得的都捐上十分之一。』

約翰的門徒和一個猶太人辯論潔淨的禮，

人多述說自己的仁慈，但忠信人誰能遇着呢？

約翰在監裏聽見基督所做的事，就打發兩個門徒去，
