時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

约翰的门徒和法利赛人正在禁食，有人来问耶稣说：“为什么约翰的门徒和法利赛人的门徒常常禁食，你的门徒却不禁食呢？”耶稣回答：“新郎跟宾客在一起的时候，宾客怎能禁食呢？只要新郎还在，就不能禁食。但日子到了，新郎要被取去，离开他们，那一天他们就要禁食了。没有人会把一块新布缝在旧衣服上，如果这样，新的布就会把旧衣服扯破，裂开的地方就更大了。也没有人会把新酒装在旧皮袋里，如果这样，酒就会把皮袋胀破，酒和皮袋都损坏了；新酒总该装在新皮袋里。”

他们说：“约翰的门徒常常禁食、祈祷，法利赛人的门徒也是这样，而你的门徒却又吃又喝。”耶稣说：“新郎跟宾客在一起的时候，你们怎么可以叫宾客禁食呢？但日子到了，新郎要被取去，离开他们，那一天他们就要禁食了。”他又对他们设个比喻说：“没有人会从新衣服撕下一块布，补在旧衣服上，如果这样，不但新衣服撕破了，而且新撕下的布，也和旧的不调和。也没有人会把新酒装在旧皮袋里；如果这样，新酒就会把皮袋胀破，不但酒漏掉，皮袋也损坏了；人总是把新酒装在新皮袋里。喝惯陈酒的人，就不想喝新酒，他总说陈的好。”

“你们禁食的时候，不可像伪君子那样愁眉苦脸，他们装成难看的样子，叫人看出他们在禁食。我实在告诉你们，他们已经得了他们的赏赐。

约翰来了，不吃也不喝，人说他是鬼附的；人子来了，又吃又喝，人却说：‘你看，这人贪食好酒，与税吏和罪人为友。’但智慧藉着它所作的，就证实是公义的了。”

耶稣向那些自恃为义、轻视别人的人，讲了这个比喻：“有两个人上圣殿去祈祷，一个是法利赛人，一个是税吏。法利赛人站着，祷告给自己听，这样说：‘神啊，我感谢你，我不像别人，勒索、不义、奸淫，也不像这个税吏。我一个礼拜禁食两次，我的一切收入都奉献十分之一。’

约翰的门徒和一个犹太人为洁净礼发生辩论。

很多人自称忠诚，但信实的人，谁能遇着呢？

约翰在监狱里听见基督所作的，就派门徒去问他：
