The tempter came to him and said,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

And the tempter came and said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Then the tempter approached him and said,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

And the tempter came and said to Him,“ If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said,“ If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

And the tempter came and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.

Then the tempter approached Him and said,“ If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Then the foreign rabble who were traveling with the Israelites began to crave the good things of Egypt. And the people of Israel also began to complain.“ Oh, for some meat!” they exclaimed.“ We remember the fish we used to eat for free in Egypt. And we had all the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic we wanted.But now our appetites are gone. All we ever see is this manna!”

That is why, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong. I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and that our work had been useless.

The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman,“ Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”“ Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied.“ It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said,‘ You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”“ You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.“ God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

Satan replied to the Lord,“ Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life.But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!”“ All right, do with him as you please,” the Lord said to Satan.“ But spare his life.”So Satan left the Lord’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot.

“ Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat.But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.

This great dragon— the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world— was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens,“ It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night.And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.

Yet they kept on sinning against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved.They even spoke against God himself, saying,“ God can’t give us food in the wilderness.Yes, he can strike a rock so water gushes out, but he can’t give his people bread and meat.”

Satan replied to the Lord,“ Yes, but Job has good reason to fear God.You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is!But reach out and take away everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face!”“ All right, you may test him,” the Lord said to Satan.“ Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.

“ If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned.“ There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.”

One day when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau arrived home from the wilderness exhausted and hungry.Esau said to Jacob,“ I’m starved! Give me some of that red stew!”( This is how Esau got his other name, Edom, which means“ red.”)“ All right,” Jacob replied,“ but trade me your rights as the firstborn son.”“ Look, I’m dying of starvation!” said Esau.“ What good is my birthright to me now?”But Jacob said,“ First you must swear that your birthright is mine.” So Esau swore an oath, thereby selling all his rights as the firstborn to his brother, Jacob.Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew. Esau ate the meal, then got up and left. He showed contempt for his rights as the firstborn.

Then the disciples worshiped him.“ You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.

Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal.

Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said,“ If you are the Son of God, jump off!

And immediately he began preaching about Jesus in the synagogues, saying,“ He is indeed the Son of God!”

And a voice from heaven said,“ This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

Then the devil said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
