“ I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

“ I baptize you with water, calling you to turn away from your sins. But after me, someone is coming who is more powerful than I am. I’m not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

“ I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am— so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

“ As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:

“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but the One who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove His sandals. He Himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and[ with] fire:

For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

At that time the sovereign master will wash the excrement from Zion’s women, he will rinse the bloodstains from Jerusalem’s midst, as he comes to judge and to bring devastation.

John answered them all,“ I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming– I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Then I will bring the remaining third into the fire; I will refine them like silver is refined and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name and I will answer; I will say,‘ These are my people,’ and they will say,‘ The LORD is my God.’”

Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting.And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.

Who can endure the day of his coming? Who can keep standing when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire, like a launderer’s soap.He will act like a refiner and purifier of silver and will cleanse the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer the LORD a proper offering.The offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in former times and years past.

Then as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he did on us at the beginning.And I remembered the word of the Lord, as he used to say,‘ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one Spirit.

He proclaimed,“ One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.

he saved us not by works of righteousness that we have done but on the basis of his mercy, through the washing of the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit,

Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

John answered them,“ I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize,who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!”

“ A protector comes to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their rebellious deeds,” says the LORD.“ As for me, this is my promise to them,” says the LORD.“ My spirit, who is upon you, and my words, which I have placed in your mouth, will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and descendants from this time forward,” says the LORD.

And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me,‘ The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining– this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God.”

And he will go as forerunner before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”

John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming to him and being baptized.( For John had not yet been thrown into prison.)Now a dispute came about between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew concerning ceremonial washing.So they came to John and said to him,“ Rabbi, the one who was with you on the other side of the Jordan River, about whom you testified– see, he is baptizing, and everyone is flocking to him!”John replied,“ No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.You yourselves can testify that I said,‘ I am not the Christ,’ but rather,‘ I have been sent before him.’The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. This then is my joy, and it is complete.He must become more important while I become less important.”The one who comes from above is superior to all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is superior to all.He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.The one who has accepted his testimony has confirmed clearly that God is truthful.For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit sparingly.The Father loves the Son and has placed all things under his authority.The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects the Son will not see life, but God’s wrath remains on him.

In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female– for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

For I will pour water on the parched ground and cause streams to flow on the dry land. I will pour my spirit on your offspring and my blessing on your children.

In the wilderness John the baptizer began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Before Jesus arrived, John had proclaimed a baptism for repentance to all the people of Israel.But while John was completing his mission, he said repeatedly,‘ What do you think I am? I am not he. But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!’

So Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him,“ Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.That is why I did not presume to come to you. Instead, say the word, and my servant must be healed.

This is the one about whom I said,‘ After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’

To me– less than the least of all the saints– this grace was given, to proclaim to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ

He went into all the region around the Jordan River, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

John testified about him and shouted out,“ This one was the one about whom I said,‘ He who comes after me is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’”
