They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed.

A third time he said to them,“ Why? what evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.”

and also for the innocent blood that he had shed. For he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord would not pardon.

For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the Lord sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

And Samuel said,“ Why then do you ask me, since the Lord has turned from you and become your enemy?The Lord has done to you as he spoke by me, for the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David.Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord and did not carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, therefore the Lord has done this thing to you this day.Moreover, the Lord will give Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me. The Lord will give the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines.”Then Saul fell at once full length on the ground, filled with fear because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him, for he had eaten nothing all day and all night.
