門徒見之不悅、曰、惡用此靡費為哉、

門徒見而憾曰、惡用此糜費為哉、

門徒見而不悅、曰、何為若此之麋費、

門徒見而不悅曰：『是何徒耗？

When the disciples saw this, they became angry.“ Why this waste?” they asked.

But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,“ Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another,“ Why this waste of perfume?

When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked,“ Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”“ Now what have I done?” said David.“ Can’t I even speak?”

Pharaoh said,“ Lazy, that’s what you are— lazy! That is why you keep saying,‘ Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

saying,“ When will the New Moon be over that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath be ended that we may market wheat?”— skimping on the measure, boosting the price and cheating with dishonest scales,

This is what the Lord Almighty says:“ These people say,‘ The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.’”Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai:“ Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”

And you say,‘ What a burden!’ and you sniff at it contemptuously,” says the Lord Almighty.“ When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?” says the Lord.

“ By offering defiled food on my altar.“ But you ask,‘ How have we defiled you?’“ By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible.When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.“ Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?”— says the Lord Almighty.“ Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord Almighty,“ and I will accept no offering from your hands.
