But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said,“ Why this waste?

門徒見之不悅、曰、惡用此靡費為哉、

門徒見而憾曰、惡用此糜費為哉、

門徒見而不悅、曰、何為若此之麋費、

門徒見而不悅曰：『是何徒耗？

When the disciples saw this, they were indignant.“ Why this waste?” they asked.

But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, the one who intended to betray Him,* said,“ Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the proceeds given to poor people?”Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he kept the money box, he used to steal from what was put into it.

But there were some indignantly remarking to one another,“ Why has this perfume been wasted?

Now Eliab his oldest brother heard him when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David and he said,“ Why is it that you have come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I myself know your insolence and the wickedness of your heart; for you have come down in order to see the battle.”But David said,“ What have I done now? Was it not just a question?”

But he said,“ You are lazy, very lazy; for that reason you say,‘ Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’

I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a person and his neighbor. This too is futility and striving after wind.

saying,“ When will the new moon be over, So that we may sell grain; And the Sabbath, so that we may open the wheat market, To make the ephah smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with dishonest scales,

“ This is what the Lord of armies says:‘ This people says,“ The time has not come, the time for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt.” ’ ”Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying,“ Is it time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses while this house remains desolate?”

You also say,‘ See, how tiresome it is!’ And you view it as trivial,” says the Lord of armies,“ and you bring what was taken by robbery and what is lame or sick; so you bring the offering! Should I accept it from your hand?” says the Lord.

You are presenting defiled food upon My altar. But you say,‘ How have we defiled You?’ In that you say,‘ The table of the Lord is to be despised.’And when you present a blind animal for sacrifice, is it not evil? Or when you present a lame or sick animal, is it not evil? So offer it to your governor! Would he be pleased with you, or would he receive you kindly?” says the Lord of armies.“ But now, do indeed plead for God’s favor, so that He will be gracious to us. With such an offering on your part, will He receive any of you kindly?” says the Lord of armies.“ If only there were one among you who would shut the gates, so that you would not kindle fire on My altar for nothing! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord of armies,“ nor will I accept an offering from your hand.
