“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

“ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me!

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke,I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you—when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.“ Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord.Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. This is what the Lord says:“ Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said,‘ We will not walk in it.’I appointed watchmen over you and said,‘ Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But you said,‘ We will not listen.’ (niv)

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. (niv)

“ But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they turned their backs on your law. They killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies. (niv)

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them.Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city— which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt— where also their Lord was crucified. (niv)

He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. (niv)

Again and again I sent all my servants the prophets to you. They said,“ Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and reform your actions; do not follow other gods to serve them. Then you will live in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.” But you have not paid attention or listened to me. (niv)

And you say,‘ If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ (niv)

He said to them,“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition, says:‘ If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you.Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear. “ But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say,‘ We don’t want this man to be our king.’“ He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.“ The first one came and said,‘ Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’“‘ Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied.‘ Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’“ The second came and said,‘ Sir, your mina has earned five more.’“ His master answered,‘ You take charge of five cities.’“ Then another servant came and said,‘ Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’“ His master replied,‘ I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’“ Then he said to those standing by,‘ Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’“‘ Sir,’ they said,‘ he already has ten!’“ He replied,‘ I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them— bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them,“ Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.If anyone asks you,‘ Why are you untying it?’ say,‘ The Lord needs it.’”Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,“ Why are you untying the colt?”They replied,“ The Lord needs it.”They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:“ Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”“ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus,“ Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”“ I tell you,” he replied,“ if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over itand said,“ If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace— but now it is hidden from your eyes.The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” (niv)

But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple.King Joash did not remember the kindness Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him but killed his son, who said as he lay dying,“ May the Lord see this and call you to account.” (niv)

“ The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. (niv)

The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. (niv)

From the time I brought your ancestors up from Egypt until today, I warned them again and again, saying,“ Obey me.”But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts. So I brought on them all the curses of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.’” (niv)

Hear me, my people, and I will warn you— if you would only listen to me, Israel!You shall have no foreign god among you; you shall not worship any god other than me.I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.“ But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. (niv)

Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart and be saved. How long will you harbor wicked thoughts? (niv)

Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. (niv)

“ You stiff- necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— (niv)

My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them. (niv)

“ In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion. (niv)

They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.) (niv)

The Lord, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them through his messengers again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place.But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy. (niv)

Take warning, Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you and make your land desolate so no one can live in it.” (niv)

“ The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. (niv)

Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says:‘ Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. (niv)

He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed.He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’“ But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over.‘ This is the heir,’ they said.‘ Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ (niv)

But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed.Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully.He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.“ He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’ (niv)

When I came, why was there no one? When I called, why was there no one to answer? Was my arm too short to deliver you? Do I lack the strength to rescue you? By a mere rebuke I dry up the sea, I turn rivers into a desert; their fish rot for lack of water and die of thirst. (niv)

But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. (niv)

For twenty-three years— from the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah until this very day— the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened.And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.They said,“ Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever.Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.”“ But you did not listen to me,” declares the Lord,“ and you have aroused my anger with what your hands have made, and you have brought harm to yourselves.” (niv)

I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. (niv)
