For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

John came to show you the right way to live. And you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. You saw this. But even then you did not turn away from your sins and believe him.

( And when all the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they acknowledged God’s way of righteousness, because they had been baptized with John’s baptism.But since the Pharisees and experts in the law had not been baptized by him, they rejected the plan of God for themselves.)

And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house. She brought an alabaster jar of perfumeand stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to wash his feet with her tears. She wiped his feet with her hair, kissing them and anointing them with the perfume.When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,“ This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him— she’s a sinner!”Jesus replied to him,“ Simon, I have something to say to you.” He said,“ Say it, teacher.”“ A creditor had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.Since they could not pay it back, he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?”Simon answered,“ I suppose the one he forgave more.”“ You have judged correctly,” he told him.Turning to the woman, he said to Simon,“ Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she, with her tears, has washed my feet and wiped them with her hair.You gave me no kiss, but she hasn’t stopped kissing my feet since I came in.You didn’t anoint my head with olive oil, but she has anointed my feet with perfume.Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that’s why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little.”Then he said to her,“ Your sins are forgiven.”Those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves,“ Who is this man who even forgives sins?”And he said to the woman,“ Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy command delivered to them.

But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder; they closed their ears so they could not hear.They made their hearts like a rock so as not to obey the law or the words that the LORD of Armies had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. Therefore intense anger came from the LORD of Armies.

You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.I don’t receive human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.John was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.“ But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me.The Father who sent me has himself testified about me. You have not heard his voice at any time, and you haven’t seen his form.You don’t have his word residing in you, because you don’t believe the one he sent.You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me.But you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.

“ But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel did not obey me.So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own plans.

I gave her time to repent, but she does not want to repent of her sexual immorality.

and who have fallen away. This is because, to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding him up to contempt.For the ground that drinks the rain that often falls on it and that produces vegetation useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God.But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and about to be cursed, and at the end will be burned.

Now as John was completing his mission, he said,‘ Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.’“ Brothers and sisters, children of Abraham’s race, and those among you who fear God, it is to us that the word of this salvation has been sent.Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him.Though they found no grounds for the death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him killed.When they had carried out all that had been written about him, they took him down from the tree and put him in a tomb.

Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judeaand saying,“ Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!”For he is the one spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, who said: A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight!Now John had a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.Then people from Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the vicinity of the Jordan were going out to him,and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them,“ Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance.And don’t presume to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with fire that never goes out.”

This is what the LORD says: Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths,“ Which is the way to what is good?” Then take it and find rest for yourselves. But they protested,“ We won’t!”

Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”“ What then should we do?” the crowds were asking him.He replied to them,“ The one who has two shirts must share with someone who has none, and the one who has food must do the same.”Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they asked him,“ Teacher, what should we do?”He told them,“ Don’t collect any more than what you have been authorized.”

instructing his opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance leading them to the knowledge of the truth.

A road will be there and a way; it will be called the Holy Way. The unclean will not travel on it, but it will be for the one who walks the path. Fools will not wander on it.
