The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.

He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.He catches the wise in their own craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the Lord, the God of Israel,they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ houses and said to them,“ Let us build with you, for we worship your God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria who brought us here.”

Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,“ So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.”

And the conspiracy grew strong, and the people with Absalom kept increasing.

Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts,

Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying,“ The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.”And he came up to Jesus at once and said,“ Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him.

And Absalom and all the men of Israel said,“ The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring harm upon Absalom.

Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart;when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart;

Then Jehu assembled all the people and said to them,“ Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him much.Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests. Let none be missing, for I have a great sacrifice to offer to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu did it with cunning in order to destroy the worshipers of Baal.

For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written,“ He catches the wise in their craftiness,”and again,“ The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the Lord.

Go, make yet more sure. Know and see the place where his foot is, and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he is very cunning.See therefore and take note of all the lurking places where he hides, and come back to me with sure information. Then I will go with you. And if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.”
