Stay awake and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

At my first defense, no one stood by me, but everyone deserted me. May it not be counted against them.But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that I might fully preach the word and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.

Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him,“ You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it and said,“ I am not.”One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said,“ Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”Peter denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed.

I called to the LORD in my distress, and he answered me. I cried out for help from deep inside Sheol; you heard my voice.When you threw me into the depths, into the heart of the seas, the current overcame me. All your breakers and your billows swept over me.And I said,“ I have been banished from your sight, yet I will look once more toward your holy temple.”The water engulfed me up to the neck; the watery depths overcame me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.I sank to the foundations of the mountains, the earth’s gates shut behind me forever! Then you raised my life from the Pit, LORD my God!As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer came to you, to your holy temple.

The ropes of death were wrapped around me, and the torments of Sheol overcame me; I encountered trouble and sorrow.Then I called on the name of the LORD:“ LORD, save me!”

They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter was following at a distance.They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter sat among them.When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said,“ This man was with him too.”But he denied it:“ Woman, I don’t know him.”After a little while, someone else saw him and said,“ You’re one of them too.”“ Man, I am not!” Peter said.About an hour later, another kept insisting,“ This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean.”But Peter said,“ Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him,“ Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”

Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves— but Jesus kept sleeping.So the disciples came and woke him up, saying,“ Lord, save us! We’re going to die!”

While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s maidservants came.When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said,“ You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.”But he denied it:“ I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby,“ This man is one of them.”But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again,“ You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean.”Then he started to curse and swear,“ I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him,“ Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

Rise up, LORD! Save me, my God! You strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked.

When the servant of the man of God got up early and went out, he discovered an army with horses and chariots surrounding the city. So he asked Elisha,“ Oh, my master, what are we to do?”

especially because of the extraordinary revelations. Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to torment me so that I would not exalt myself.Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me.But he said to me,“ My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me.So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl approached him and said,“ You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”But he denied it in front of everyone:“ I don’t know what you’re talking about.”When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there,“ This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!”And again he denied it with an oath:“ I don’t know the man!”After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter,“ You really are one of them, since even your accent gives you away.”Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath,“ I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed,and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken,“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

they reeled and staggered like a drunkard, and all their skill was useless.Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then he guided them to the harbor they longed for.

Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck.I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep water, and a flood sweeps over me.
