Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed.“ Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked.

When Jesus finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed by his teaching,

Now Jesus left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astonished, saying,“ Where did he get these ideas? And what is this wisdom that has been given to him? What are these miracles that are done through his hands?Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” And so they took offense at him.Then Jesus said to them,“ A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, and among his relatives, and in his own house.”He was not able to do a miracle there, except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.And he was amazed because of their unbelief. Then he went around among the villages and taught.

Jesus went throughout all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of disease and sickness among the people.

He came to what was his own, but his own people did not receive him.

Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read,and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.Then he began to tell them,“ Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read.”All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They said,“ Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”Jesus said to them,“ No doubt you will quote to me the proverb,‘ Physician, heal yourself!’ and say,‘ What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here in your hometown too.’”And he added,“ I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, when the sky was shut up three and a half years, and there was a great famine over all the land.Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”When they heard this, all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage.They got up, forced him out of the town, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.But he passed through the crowd and went on his way.

He came to a town called Nazareth and lived there. Then what had been spoken by the prophets was fulfilled, that Jesus would be called a Nazarene.

After three days Paul called the local Jewish leaders together. When they had assembled, he said to them,“ Brothers, although I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, from Jerusalem I was handed over as a prisoner to the Romans.When they had heard my case, they wanted to release me, because there was no basis for a death sentence against me.But when the Jews objected, I was forced to appeal to Caesar– not that I had some charge to bring against my own people.So for this reason I have asked to see you and speak with you, for I am bound with this chain because of the hope of Israel.”They replied,“ We have received no letters from Judea about you, nor have any of the brothers come from there and reported or said anything bad about you.But we would like to hear from you what you think, for regarding this sect we know that people everywhere speak against it.”They set a day to meet with him, and they came to him where he was staying in even greater numbers. From morning until evening he explained things to them, testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus from both the law of Moses and the prophets.Some were convinced by what he said, but others refused to believe.So they began to leave, unable to agree among themselves, after Paul made one last statement:“ The Holy Spirit spoke rightly to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiahwhen he said,‘ Go to this people and say,“ You will keep on hearing, but will never understand, and you will keep on looking, but will never perceive.For the heart of this people has become dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have closed their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.”’“ Therefore be advised that this salvation from God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen!”

I will declare your name to my countrymen! In the middle of the assembly I will praise you!

I have told the great assembly about your justice. Look! I spare no words! O LORD, you know this is true.I have not failed to tell about your justice; I spoke about your reliability and deliverance; I have not neglected to tell the great assembly about your loyal love and faithfulness.

When they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and discovered that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized these men had been with Jesus.

Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously,“ It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles.
