When Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining about this, he said to them,“ Does this cause you to be offended?Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.But there are some of you who do not believe.”( For Jesus had already known from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)So Jesus added,“ Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed him to come.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?

You know that everyone in the province of Asia deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

Jesus replied,“ I tell you the solemn truth, you are looking for me not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you ate all the loaves of bread you wanted.

“ Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.“ Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely on account of me.Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.

For Demas deserted me, since he loved the present age, and he went to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia.

‘ I know where you live– where Satan’s throne is. Yet you continue to cling to my name and you have not denied your faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was killed in your city where Satan lives.

And so they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them,“ A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own house.”

Peter said to him,“ If they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away!”

“ Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.And whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life because of me will find it.

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision carries any weight– the only thing that matters is faith working through love.

The words he speaks are sinful and deceitful; he does not care about doing what is wise and right.

The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards it for eternal life.If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

Jesus replied,“ Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is the devil?”( Now he said this about Judas son of Simon Iscariot, for Judas, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.)

For I am sure of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

So do not throw away your confidence, because it has great reward.For you need endurance in order to do God’s will and so receive what is promised.For just a little longer and he who is coming will arrive and not delay.But my righteous one will live by faith, and if he shrinks back, I take no pleasure in him.But we are not among those who shrink back and thus perish, but are among those who have faith and preserve their souls.

“ Then they will hand you over to be persecuted and will kill you. You will be hated by all the nations because of my name.Then many will be led into sin, and they will betray one another and hate one another.

No one can be established through wickedness, but a righteous root cannot be moved.

But when the sun came up, they were scorched, and because they did not have sufficient root, they withered.

Then he said to them all,“ If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself?

And you will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

For what hope does the godless have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?Does God listen to his cry when distress overtakes him?Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call out to God at all times?

Then Jesus said to them,“ This night you will all fall away because of me, for it is written:‘ I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

But they have no root in themselves and do not endure. Then, when trouble or persecution comes because of the word, immediately they fall away.

But the person who endures to the end will be saved.

Those who want to make a good showing in external matters are trying to force you to be circumcised. They do so only to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ.

The wicked person desires a stronghold, but the righteous root endures.

Then Jesus called the crowd, along with his disciples, and said to them,“ If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.For what benefit is it for a person to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his life?

On that day, many will say to me,‘ Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons and do many powerful deeds?’Then I will declare to them,‘ I never knew you. Go away from me, you lawbreakers!’
