“ When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.

“ What happens when an evil spirit comes out of a person? It goes through dry areas looking for a place to rest. But it doesn’t find it.

“ When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none.

And so that person is worse off than before.”

As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down in front of him. Then he screamed,“ Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Please, I beg you, don’t torture me!”For Jesus had already commanded the evil spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was placed under guard and put in chains and shackles, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon’s power.Jesus demanded,“ What is your name?”“ Legion,” he replied, for he was filled with many demons.The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the bottomless pit.There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby, and the demons begged him to let them enter into the pigs. So Jesus gave them permission.

“ The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,“ when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread or water but of hearing the words of the Lord.People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from border to border searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it.Beautiful girls and strong young men will grow faint in that day, thirsting for the Lord’s word.

I will open up rivers for them on the high plateaus. I will give them fountains of water in the valleys. I will fill the desert with pools of water. Rivers fed by springs will flow across the parched ground.

They began screaming at him,“ Why are you interfering with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before God’s appointed time?”

With a shriek, he screamed,“ Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!”For Jesus had already said to the spirit,“ Come out of the man, you evil spirit.”Then Jesus demanded,“ What is your name?” And he replied,“ My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.”Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place.There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby.“ Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged.“ Let us enter them.”So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.

“ Where have you come from?” the Lord asked Satan. Satan answered the Lord,“ I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.”

The lame will leap like a deer, and those who cannot speak will sing for joy! Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will water the wasteland.The parched ground will become a pool, and springs of water will satisfy the thirsty land. Marsh grass and reeds and rushes will flourish where desert jackals once lived.

Then he said to me,“ This river flows east through the desert into the valley of the Dead Sea. The waters of this stream will make the salty waters of the Dead Sea fresh and pure.There will be swarms of living things wherever the water of this river flows. Fish will abound in the Dead Sea, for its waters will become fresh. Life will flourish wherever this water flows.Fishermen will stand along the shores of the Dead Sea. All the way from En gedi to En eglaim, the shores will be covered with nets drying in the sun. Fish of every kind will fill the Dead Sea, just as they fill the Mediterranean.But the marshes and swamps will not be purified; they will still be salty.Fruit trees of all kinds will grow along both sides of the river. The leaves of these trees will never turn brown and fall, and there will always be fruit on their branches. There will be a new crop every month, for they are watered by the river flowing from the Temple. The fruit will be for food and the leaves for healing.”

O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed.
