約翰是一盞點亮的明燈，你們情願暫時享受他的光。

約翰的門徒離去後，耶穌對眾人談論約翰，說：「你們從前去曠野要看什麼呢？看隨風搖動的蘆葦嗎？如果不是，你們到底想看什麼？是看穿綾羅綢緞的人嗎？那些衣著華麗、生活奢侈的人住在王宮裡。你們究竟想看什麼？看先知嗎？是的，我告訴你們，他不只是先知。聖經上說，『看啊，我要差遣我的使者在你前面為你預備道路。』這裡所指的就是約翰。我告訴你們，凡婦人所生的，沒有一個比約翰大，但上帝國中最微不足道的也比他大。」眾百姓和稅吏聽了這番話，都承認上帝是公義的，因為他們接受了約翰的洗禮。但那些法利賽人和律法教師沒有接受約翰的洗禮，拒絕了上帝為他們所定的旨意。

因此，你們要留心聽，因為凡有的，還要給他更多；凡沒有的，連他自以為已經擁有的也要被奪去。」

那時，耶路撒冷、猶太各地和約旦河一帶的人都來到約翰那裡，

約翰的洗禮是從哪裡來的？從天上來的，還是從人來的？」他們便彼此議論說：「如果我們說『是從天上來的』，祂一定會問我們，『那你們為什麼不信他？』

他就到約旦河附近宣講悔改的洗禮，使人的罪得到赦免。這正應驗了以賽亞先知書上的話：「在曠野有人大聲呼喊，『預備主的道，修直祂的路。一切山谷將被填滿，大山小丘將被削平，彎曲的道路要被修直，崎嶇的路徑要被鋪平。世人都要看見上帝的救恩。』」約翰對前來接受他洗禮的人群說：「你們這些毒蛇的後代！誰指示你們逃避那將臨的烈怒呢？

耶穌轉過身來，看見他們跟著，便問：「你們想要什麼？」他們說：「老師，你住在哪裡？」

我定了這計劃，難道會反覆無常嗎？難道我是意氣用事，出爾反爾嗎？我在信實的上帝面前保證：我們對你們說的話絕不會忽是忽非！

那時，施洗者約翰來到猶太的曠野傳道，說：「悔改吧，因為天國臨近了！」約翰就是以賽亞先知所說的那位，他說：「有人在曠野大聲呼喊，『預備主的道，修直祂的路。』」

可是，你必不再居首位，因為你放縱情慾，如沸騰不止的水，你上了你父親的床，玷污了我的榻。
