The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:“ I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. (niv)

“ But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend,I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said,‘ You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. (niv)

Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations— as it is today. (niv)

For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac.Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad— in order that God’s purpose in election might stand:not by works but by him who calls— she was told,“ The older will serve the younger.”Just as it is written:“ Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” (niv)

“ You have spoken arrogantly against me,” says the Lord.“ Yet you ask,‘ What have we said against you?’“ You have said,‘ It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? (niv)

Because he loved your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, (niv)

As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. (niv)

When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.For the Lord’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance.In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye,like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft.The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him.He made him ride on the heights of the land and fed him with the fruit of the fields. He nourished him with honey from the rock, and with oil from the flinty crag,with curds and milk from herd and flock and with fattened lambs and goats, with choice rams of Bashan and the finest kernels of wheat. You drank the foaming blood of the grape. (niv)

You have wearied the Lord with your words.“ How have we wearied him?” you ask. By saying,“ All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them” or“ Where is the God of justice?” (niv)

Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life. (niv)

There above it stood the Lord, and he said:“ I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. (niv)

So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said,“ Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed.May God give you heaven’s dew and earth’s richness— an abundance of grain and new wine.May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.”After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. (niv)

Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.“ But you ask,‘ How are we to return?’“ Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.“ But you ask,‘ How are we robbing you?’“ In tithes and offerings. (niv)

May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now reside as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.” (niv)

“ You of this generation, consider the word of the Lord:“ Have I been a desert to Israel or a land of great darkness? Why do my people say,‘ We are free to roam; we will come to you no more’? (niv)

and said to me,‘ I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’ (niv)

This is what the Lord says:“ What fault did your ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. (niv)

“ A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty.“ It is you priests who show contempt for my name.“ But you ask,‘ How have we shown contempt for your name?’“ By offering defiled food on my altar.“ But you ask,‘ How have we defiled you?’“ By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible. (niv)

Isaac trembled violently and said,“ Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him— and indeed he will be blessed!” (niv)

The Lord said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” (niv)

Then the man said,“ Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”Jacob said,“ Please tell me your name.” But he replied,“ Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying,“ It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” (niv)

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?” (niv)
