耶穌的名聲傳開了，希律王也聽見。有人說：「施洗的約翰從死人中復活了，因此才有這些異能在他裏面運行。」但別人說：「他是以利亞。」又有人說：「是先知，正如先知中的一位。」希律聽見卻說：「是我所斬的約翰，他復活了。」原來，希律為他兄弟腓力的妻子希羅底的緣故，派人去抓了約翰，把他綁了在監獄裏，因為希律已經娶了那婦人。約翰曾對希律說：「你佔有你兄弟的妻子是不合法的。」於是希羅底懷恨他，想要殺他，只是不能。因為希律怕約翰，知道他是義人，是聖人，所以就保護他，雖然聽了他的講論十分困惑，仍然樂意聽他。有一天，恰巧是希律的生日，希律擺設宴席，請了大臣、千夫長和加利利的領袖。他的女兒希羅底進來跳舞，使希律和同席的人都很高興。王就對女孩說：「無論你要甚麼，向我求，我都會給你」；又對她多次起誓說：「無論你向我求甚麼，就是我國家的一半，我也會給你。」她就出去對她母親說：「我該求甚麼呢？」她母親說：「施洗約翰的頭。」她就急忙進去見王，求他說：「我願王立刻把施洗約翰的頭放在盤子裏給我。」王就很憂愁，然而因他所發的誓，又因同席的人，不願食言，就立刻派一個衛兵，吩咐拿約翰的頭來。衛兵就去，在監獄裏斬了約翰，把頭放在盤子裏，拿來給那女孩，她就給她母親。

那時，希律分封王聽見耶穌的名聲，就對臣僕說：「這是施洗的約翰從死人中復活，因此才有這些異能在他裏面運行。」原來，希律為他兄弟腓力的妻子希羅底的緣故，把約翰抓住綁了，關進監獄，因為約翰曾對他說：「你佔有這婦人是不合法的。」希律就想要殺他，可是怕民眾，因為他們認為約翰是先知。到了希律的生日，希羅底的女兒在眾人面前跳舞，使希律歡喜，於是希律發誓許諾隨她所求的給她。女兒被母親指使，就說：「請把施洗約翰的頭放在盤子裏，拿來給我。」王就憂愁，然而因他所發的誓，又因同席的人，就下令給她；於是打發人去，在監獄裏斬了約翰，把頭放在盤子裏，拿來給那女孩，她拿去給她母親。約翰的門徒來，把屍體領去埋葬了，又去告訴耶穌。

他們當中最好的，不過像蒺藜；最正直的，不過如荊棘籬笆。你守候的日子，懲罰已經來到，他們必擾亂不安。

四面的驚嚇使他害怕，在他腳跟後面追趕他。他的力量必因飢餓衰敗，禍患要在他的旁邊等候，

「日月星辰要顯出預兆，地上的邦國也有困苦，因海中波浪的響聲而惶惶不安。

他們回答：「是施洗的約翰；有人說是以利亞；還有人說是古時的一個先知又活了。」

他們轉眼之間成了何等荒涼！他們被驚恐滅盡了。

因為這是萬軍之主耶和華使異象谷混亂、踐踏、煩擾的日子；城牆被攻破，哀聲達到山上。
