當時耶穌的名聲傳揚出去，希律王也聽到了。有人說：“施洗的約翰從死人中復活了，所以他身上有行神蹟的能力。”又有人說：“他是以利亞。”還有人說：“他是先知，像古時先知中的一位。”希律聽見就說：“是約翰，我砍了他的頭，他又活了！”原來希律曾親自派人去捉拿約翰，把他捆鎖在監裡。他這樣作，是為了他弟弟的妻子希羅底的緣故，因為他娶了希羅底為妻，而約翰曾對希律說：“你佔有你兄弟的妻子是不合理的。”於是希羅底懷恨在心，想要殺他，只是不能。因為希律懼怕約翰，知道他是公義聖潔的人，就保護他。希律聽了約翰的話，就非常困擾，卻仍然喜歡聽他。有一天，機會來了。在希律生日的那一天，他為大臣、千夫長和加利利的要人擺設了筵席。希羅底的女兒進來跳舞，使希律和在座的賓客都很開心。王就對女孩子說：“你無論想要甚麼，只管向我求，我一定給你！”並且對她再三起誓：“你無論向我求甚麼，就是我國的一半，我也一定給你！”於是她出去問母親：“我該求甚麼呢？”希羅底告訴她：“施洗的約翰的頭！”她急忙到王面前，向王要求說：“願王立刻把施洗的約翰的頭放在盤子上給我！”希律王非常憂愁，但是因為他的誓言和在座的賓客，就不願拒絕她。希律王立刻差遣一個侍衛，吩咐把約翰的頭拿來。侍衛就去了，在監裡斬了約翰的頭，把頭放在盤子上，拿來交給那女孩子，女孩子又交給她的母親。

那時，分封王希律聽見耶穌的名聲，就對臣僕說：“這人是施洗的約翰，他從死人中復活，所以他身上有行神蹟的能力。”原來希律為了他弟弟腓力的妻子希羅底的緣故，拘捕了約翰，把他捆綁，關在監裡，因為約翰多次告訴他：“你佔有她是不合理的。”他想殺約翰，但又害怕群眾，因為他們都認為約翰是個先知。到了希律生日的那天，希羅底的女兒在眾人面前跳舞，希律非常高興，就起誓答應她，無論求甚麼都給她。她在母親的慫恿之下，說：“請把施洗的約翰的頭放在盤子上給我。”王就憂愁，但因為誓言和在座的賓客，就下令給她。他派人去，在監裡斬了約翰的頭，把頭放在盤子上，拿來給那女孩子，她又帶給母親。約翰的門徒前來，領了屍體，把它埋葬，然後去告訴耶穌。

他們中最好的，也不過像荊棘，最正直的，也不過是有刺的籬笆。你的守望者所預言的日子，和你被鑒察的時候，已經來到；現在他們必要慌亂不安。

驚駭四面恐嚇他，並且追趕他的腳蹤。他的氣力因飢餓衰敗，禍患預備使他跌倒。

“日月星辰將有異兆；在地上，各國也要因著海洋波濤的咆哮而困苦不安。

他們回答：“有人說是施洗的約翰，有人說是以利亞，還有人說是古時的一位先知復活了。”

他們忽然間成了多麼荒涼，被突然的驚恐完全消滅。
