這是因為耶穌吩咐汙靈從那個人身上出來。原來汙靈曾多次抓住那個人，雖然他被鐵鏈和腳鐐捆鎖，被看守著，可是他掙斷鎖鏈，被鬼魔驅逐到曠野去。

他經常被腳鐐和鐵鏈捆起來，然而他總是掙斷鐵鏈、打碎腳鐐。沒有人能制伏他。不管黑夜白晝，他常常在墓地和山上喊叫，又用石頭砍自己。

耶穌斥責汙靈說：「住口！從他身上出來！」鬼魔把那個人摔倒在眾人中間，就從他身上出來了，但沒有傷害他。

你們要謹慎，要警醒。你們的仇敵魔鬼就像咆哮的獅子走來走去，尋找可吞吃的人。

邪靈喊叫一聲，使孩子劇烈地抽瘋，就出來了。孩子變得像死人那樣，所以許多人說：「他死了。」

他們就把他帶到耶穌面前來。邪靈一見耶穌，立刻使孩子劇烈地抽瘋，倒在地上打滾，口吐白沫。

有一個王統管牠們，就是那無底坑的使者；他的名字，希伯來語是「阿巴頓」，按希臘語的名字是「阿波倫」。

你們屬於你們的父——魔鬼，並且想要隨你們父的欲望去做。他從起初就是殺人的，不站在真理之中，因為他裡面沒有真理。他說虛假之事是出於自己的本性，因為他本來就是個說謊者，並且是說謊者之父。
