For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

This was because Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times the spirit had taken hold of him. The man’s hands and feet were chained, and he was kept under guard. But he had broken his chains. And then the demon had forced him to go out into lonely places in the countryside.

甚至有人把保羅身上的手巾和圍裙拿去，放在病人身上，疾病就從他們身上消退了，邪靈也出去了。可是有一些四處遊歷的猶太驅魔師，向那些有邪靈附身的人，擅自稱呼主耶穌的名，說：「我藉著保羅所傳的耶穌，吩咐你們出來。」有一個名叫斯克瓦的猶太祭司長，他的七個兒子都在做這種事。邪靈回答他們，說：「耶穌我認識，保羅我也知道！但你們呢？你們是誰？」有邪靈附身的那個人就跳到他們身上，壓制了所有的人，勝過了他們，以致他們赤著身帶著傷，從那房子逃了出去。

你看，邪靈抓住他，忽然喊叫起來，又使他抽瘋，口吐白沫；邪靈折磨著他，就是不離開。

他們就把他帶到耶穌面前來。邪靈一見耶穌，立刻使孩子劇烈地抽瘋，倒在地上打滾，口吐白沫。耶穌問孩子的父親：「這事發生在他身上有多久了？」他回答說：「從小就這樣。邪靈經常把他扔進火裡或水裡，要害死他。但你如果能做什麼，就求你憐憫我們，幫助我們！」耶穌對他說：「『如果你能』？——對信的人，一切都能。」那孩子的父親立刻喊著說：「我信！但我的不信之處，求你幫助！」耶穌看見眾人都跑上來，就斥責那汙靈，說：「你這聾啞的邪靈，我命令你：從他裡面出來，不可再進去！」邪靈喊叫一聲，使孩子劇烈地抽瘋，就出來了。孩子變得像死人那樣，所以許多人說：「他死了。」

那孩子上前來的時候，鬼魔把他摔倒，使他劇烈地抽瘋。耶穌就斥責那汙靈，使孩子痊癒，把孩子交給他父親。

這是因為耶穌對他說：「你出來，汙靈！離開這個人！」

溫柔地管教那些反對的人；或許神會賜給這些人悔改的心，到真理的知識當中。這樣，那些被魔鬼擄去、隨從魔鬼意思的人，就能醒悟過來，脫離魔鬼的網羅。

這個人住在墓地裡，沒有人能捆住他，就是用鐵鏈也不行。他經常被腳鐐和鐵鏈捆起來，然而他總是掙斷鐵鏈、打碎腳鐐。沒有人能制伏他。不管黑夜白晝，他常常在墓地和山上喊叫，又用石頭砍自己。
