譬童子坐於街市、相呼曰、我向爾吹笛、而爾不躍、我向爾舉哀、而爾不哭、

譬諸童子坐於市井而相呼曰：「我吹笛、爾未舞！我悲歌、爾不哭！」

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:“‘ We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’

「我該用甚麼來比這世代呢？這正像孩童坐在街市上向同伴呼喊：『我們為你們吹笛，你們不跳舞；我們唱哀歌，你們不捶胸。』約翰來了，既不吃也不喝，人們就說他是被鬼附的；人子來了，也吃也喝，他們又說這人貪食好酒，是稅吏和罪人的朋友。而智慧是由它的果子來證實的。」

耶和華啊，你的眼目不是在尋找誠實嗎？你擊打他們，他們卻不傷慟；你摧毀他們，他們仍不領受管教。他們使臉剛硬過於磐石，不肯回頭。我說：「這些人實在是貧寒的，他們是愚昧的，因為不知道耶和華的作為，也不知道他們神的法則。我要去見尊貴的人，向他們說話，他們應該知道耶和華的作為，知道他們神的法則。」然而，這些人卻齊心將軛折斷，掙開繩索。

城裏的廣場滿有男孩女孩在玩耍。

愚昧人既無知，為何手拿銀錢去買智慧呢？

所有的默示，在你們看來都如封住的書卷，人將這書卷交給識字的人，說：「請念吧！」他說：「我不能念，因為它封住了。」又將這書卷交給不識字的人，說：「請念吧！」他說：「我不識字。」

「他要將知識指教誰呢？要向誰闡明信息呢？是向那些剛斷奶的，離開母親胸懷的嗎？因為他咕噥咕噥，咕噥咕噥，嘮嘮叨叨，嘮嘮叨叨，這裏一點，那裏一點。」耶和華要藉嘲弄的嘴唇和外邦人的舌頭，向這百姓說話。他曾對他們說：「這是安歇之所，你們要使疲乏的人得安歇，這是歇息之處。」他們卻不肯聽。耶和華的話對他們而言是「咕噥咕噥，咕噥咕噥，嘮嘮叨叨，嘮嘮叨叨，這裏一點，那裏一點」；以致他們往前行，卻後仰跌倒，甚至跌傷，落入陷阱，被抓住了。
