比之童子、坐於市井、相呼曰、我吹籲、爾不踊、我悲歌、爾不哭、

譬童子坐於街市、相呼曰、我向爾吹笛、而爾不躍、我向爾舉哀、而爾不哭、

譬諸童子坐於市井而相呼曰：「我吹笛、爾未舞！我悲歌、爾不哭！」

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:“‘ We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’

我可用什么比这世代呢？好像孩童坐在街市上招呼同伴，说：‘我们向你们吹笛，你们不跳舞；我们向你们举哀，你们不捶胸。’约翰来了，也不吃也不喝，人就说他是被鬼附着的；人子来了，也吃也喝，人又说他是贪食好酒的人，是税吏和罪人的朋友。但智慧之子总以智慧为是。”

耶和华啊，你的眼目不是看顾诚实吗？你击打他们，他们却不伤恸；你毁灭他们，他们仍不受惩治。他们使脸刚硬过于磐石，不肯回头。我说：这些人实在是贫穷的，是愚昧的，因为不晓得耶和华的作为和他们神的法则。我要去见尊大的人，对他们说话，因为他们晓得耶和华的作为和他们神的法则。哪知，这些人齐心将轭折断，挣开绳索。

城中街上必满有男孩女孩玩耍。

愚昧人既无聪明，为何手拿价银买智慧呢？

所有的默示，你们看如封住的书卷，人将这书卷交给识字的，说：“请念吧！”他说：“我不能念，因为是封住了。”又将这书卷交给不识字的人，说：“请念吧！”他说：“我不识字。”

讥诮先知的说：“他要将知识指教谁呢？要使谁明白传言呢？是那刚断奶离怀的吗？他竟命上加命，令上加令，律上加律，例上加例，这里一点，那里一点。”先知说：“不然，主要藉异邦人的嘴唇和外邦人的舌头对这百姓说话。”他曾对他们说：“你们要使疲乏人得安息，这样才得安息，才得舒畅。”他们却不肯听。所以，耶和华向他们说的话是命上加命，令上加令，律上加律，例上加例，这里一点，那里一点，以致他们前行仰面跌倒，而且跌碎，并陷入网罗被缠住。
