這孩子漸漸長大，心靈堅強，住在曠野，直到他在以色列人面前公開出現的日子。

亞那和該亞法作大祭司。那時，撒迦利亞的兒子約翰在曠野裏，神的話臨到他。

這樣，我們不再作小孩子，中了人的詭計和欺騙的法術，被一切邪說之風搖動，飄來飄去。

所以，親愛的，既然你們預先知道這事，就當防備，免得被惡人的錯謬誘惑，從自己穩定的立場上墜落。

我有此意，難道是反覆不定嗎？難道我的意願是從私慾起的，以致我忽是忽非嗎？我指着信實的神說，我們向你們所傳的道並非又是又非的。因為，我、西拉和提摩太在你們中間傳神的兒子耶穌基督，從沒有「又是又非」的；在他只有一個「是」。神的應許，不論有多少，在基督都是「是」的。所以，我們藉着他說「阿們」，使神因我們得榮耀。

只要憑着信心求，一點也不疑惑；因為那疑惑的人，就像海中的波浪被風吹動翻騰。這樣的人不要想從主那裏得到甚麼。三心二意的人，在他一切所行的路上都搖擺不定。

在那些日子，施洗的約翰出來，在猶太的曠野宣講：「你們要悔改！因為天國近了。」這人就是以賽亞先知所說的：「在曠野有聲音呼喊着：預備主的道，修直他的路。」這約翰身穿駱駝毛的衣服，腰束皮帶，吃的是蝗蟲和野蜜。那時，耶路撒冷、全猶太和全約旦河地區的人，都到約翰那裏去，

這些人是無水的泉源，是狂風催逼的霧氣，有漆黑的幽暗為他們存留。

他說：「我就是那在曠野呼喊的聲音：修直主的道。」正如以賽亞先知所說的。

照這話，施洗約翰來到曠野，宣講悔改的洗禮，使罪得赦。猶太全地和全耶路撒冷的人都出去，到約翰那裏，承認他們的罪，在約旦河裏受他的洗。

你卻放縱如水，必不得居首位；因為你上了你父親的床，你上了我的榻，污辱了它！

他們一走，耶穌就對眾人談到約翰，說：「你們從前到曠野去，是要看甚麼呢？看風吹動的蘆葦嗎？你們出去到底是要看甚麼？看穿細軟衣服的人嗎？那穿細軟衣服的人是在王宮裏。
