那孩子漸漸長大，心靈強健，住在曠野，直到他顯明在以色列人面前的日子。

亞那和該亞法作大祭司。那時，撒迦利亞的兒子約翰在曠野裏，神的話臨到他。

使我們不再作小孩子，中了人的詭計和欺騙的法術，被一切異教之風搖動，飄來飄去，就隨從各樣的異端；

親愛的弟兄啊，你們既然預先知道這事，就當防備，恐怕被惡人的錯謬誘惑，就從自己堅固的地步上墜落。

我有此意，豈是反覆不定嗎？我所起的意，豈是從情慾起的，叫我忽是忽非嗎？我指着信實的神說，我們向你們所傳的道，並沒有是而又非的。因為我和西拉並提摩太，在你們中間所傳神的兒子耶穌基督，總沒有是而又非的，在他只有一是。神的應許，不論有多少，在基督都是是的。所以藉着他也都是實在的，叫神因我們得榮耀。

只要憑着信心求，一點不疑惑；因為那疑惑的人，就像海中的波浪，被風吹動翻騰。這樣的人不要想從主那裏得甚麼。心懷二意的人，在他一切所行的路上都沒有定見。

那時，有施洗的約翰出來，在猶太的曠野傳道，說：「天國近了，你們應當悔改！」這人就是先知以賽亞所說的。他說：「在曠野有人聲喊着說：預備主的道，修直他的路！」這約翰身穿駱駝毛的衣服，腰束皮帶，吃的是蝗蟲、野蜜。那時，耶路撒冷和猶太全地，並約旦河一帶地方的人，都出去到約翰那裏，

這些人是無水的井，是狂風催逼的霧氣，有墨黑的幽暗為他們存留。

他說：「我就是那在曠野有人聲喊着說：『修直主的道路』，正如先知以賽亞所說的。」

照這話，約翰來了，在曠野施洗，傳悔改的洗禮，使罪得赦。猶太全地和耶路撒冷的人都出去到約翰那裏，承認他們的罪，在約旦河裏受他的洗。

但你放縱情慾，滾沸如水，必不得居首位；因為你上了你父親的牀，污穢了我的榻。

他們走的時候，耶穌就對眾人講論約翰說：「你們從前出到曠野是要看甚麼呢？要看風吹動的蘆葦嗎？你們出去到底是要看甚麼？要看穿細軟衣服的人嗎？那穿細軟衣服的人是在王宮裏。
