安息日，耶穌到一個法利賽人的領袖家裏去吃飯，他們就窺探他。這時在他面前有一個患水腫病的人。耶穌回答律法師和法利賽人，說：「安息日治病合不合法？」他們卻不說話。耶穌扶着那人，治好了他，叫他走了。耶穌對他們說：「你們中間誰有兒子或有牛在安息日掉在井裏，不立刻拉他上來呢？」他們對這些事不能反駁。

於是他們窺探耶穌，打發奸細裝作好人，要在他的話上抓把柄，好把他交給總督處置。

耶穌從那裏出來，文士和法利賽人就開始極力地催逼他，盤問他許多事，伺機要抓他的話柄。

會堂的主管因為耶穌在安息日治病，就很生氣，對眾人說：「有六天應當做工，那六天之內可以來求醫，在安息日卻不可。」

祭司長和全議會尋找假見證控告耶穌，要處死他。雖然有好些人來作假見證，總找不到實據。最後有兩個人前來，

他們憑一句話定一個人有罪，為在城門口斷是非的設下羅網，又用虛無的事屈枉義人。

惡人窺探義人，想要殺他。耶和華必不把他交在惡人手中，當審判的時候，也不定他的罪。

我聽見許多的毀謗，四圍都是驚嚇；連我知己朋友都看着我跌倒：「告他吧，我們要告他！或者他被引誘，我們就能勝他，在他身上報仇。」

他們就問他：「他給你做了甚麼？是怎麼開了你的眼睛？」他回答他們：「我已經告訴你們了，你們不聽，為甚麼又要聽呢？難道你們也要作他的門徒嗎？」他們就罵他：「你是他的門徒，而我們是摩西的門徒。神對摩西說話是我們知道的，可是這個人，我們不知道他從哪裏來。」

那尋索我命的設下羅網，那想要害我的口出惡言，整日思想詭計。

於是法利賽人中有的說：「這個人不是從神來的，因為他不守安息日。」另有的說：「一個罪人怎能行這樣的神蹟呢？」他們之間就產生了分裂。

所以猶太人對那被治好了的人說：「今天是安息日，你拿褥子是不合法的。」他卻回答他們：「那使我痊癒的人對我說：『拿起你的褥子走吧！』」他們問他：「對你說『拿起褥子走』的是甚麼人？」那治好了的人不知道那人是誰，因為那裏人很多，耶穌已經躲開了。後來耶穌在聖殿裏找到他，對他說：「你已經痊癒了，不要再犯罪，免得你的遭遇更壞。」那人就去告訴猶太人，使他痊癒的是耶穌。所以猶太人迫害耶穌，因為他在安息日做了這些事。
