第二天清早，天還沒亮，耶穌就起來獨自走到曠野去禱告。西門和同伴們四處尋找耶穌，找到了，便對祂說：「大家都在找你呢！」耶穌卻回答說：「我們到附近的鄉鎮去吧，我也好在那裡傳道，因為我就是為這事來的。」

一天，耶穌到山上整夜向上帝禱告。

耶穌說：「我的食物就是遵行差我來者的旨意，完成祂的工作。

但那人離開之後，卻到處傳揚這件事，以致耶穌無法再公開進城。祂只能待在城外的曠野，可是人們仍從各處來找祂。

格拉森地區的居民都十分害怕，請求耶穌離開那裡，耶穌便乘船回去了。那從前被鬼附身的人懇求跟耶穌同行，耶穌卻對他說：

撒瑪利亞人來見耶穌，懇求祂留下來，祂就在那裡住了兩天。

他們發現耶穌和門徒都不在那裡，就乘船到迦百農去找祂。

耶穌聽見這個消息，就獨自坐船退到一處偏僻的地方。眾人得知後，就從各城步行來跟隨祂。耶穌上了岸，看見一大群人，心裡憐憫他們，就治好了他們當中的病人。

他們極力挽留祂，說：「天快黑了，時候不早了，跟我們一同住宿吧。」耶穌就和他們一起進村住下。

可是有許多人看見他們離開，認出了他們，便從各城鎮步行趕往那裡，比他們先到達。耶穌一下船，看見這一大群人好像沒有牧人的羊，心裡憐憫他們，於是教導了他們許多道理。
