約翰說：『我乃是在野地裏呼喊者的聲音說：「修直主的道路」，正如神言人以賽亞所說的。』

你們自己能給我作見證：我曾說過：「我不是基督，我乃是奉差遣在那一位前頭的」。娶新婦的是新郎；新郎的朋友、那站着聽他的、一聽見新郎的聲音，就歡喜快樂；所以我的這喜樂是已得完滿了。那一位必須增旺，我呢、必須衰減。『那從上頭來的是在萬有之上；那從地上出的是屬地的，他講屬地的事。那從天上來的將所見所聽過的這件事見證出來，而沒有人領受他的見證。那領受他的見證的、便是蓋上了印、承認上帝為真實。上帝所差遣的那一位講上帝的話語；因為上帝賜聖靈、總無限量。父愛子，已賜萬有在他手裏。信子的有永恆的生命；不信從子的必不得見生命，上帝的義怒卻停留在他身上。』

孩子啊，你必稱為至高者的神言人，因為你必在主的前頭走，豫備他的道路，將得救的經驗——即罪之得赦免——賜給他的子民；這都是因了我們的上帝憐憫的心腸；由於此、昇起來的光就要從高處眷顧我們，照亮那坐在黑暗中死陰影裏的人，引導我們的腳進平安的路。』

這個人來作見證，是要為光作見證，使眾人藉着他而相信。

約翰回答他們說：『我是用水施洗的；但有一位你們不認識的、站在你們中間，就是那在我以後來的，我配不起他、去解他的鞋帶的。』這些事是在約但河外的伯大尼、約翰施洗的地方、發生的。第二天、約翰看見耶穌向他那裏走去，就說：『看哪，上帝的羊羔，除掉世人的罪的！這一位就是我所說到：「有一個人在我以後來，位在我前頭，因為他本是比我先的」。我從前也不認識他；但是為要使他向以色列顯明出來；故此我來用水施洗。』約翰作見證說：『我見過聖靈、彷彿鴿子、從天上降下，停在耶穌上頭。我從前也不認識他；但那差我用水施洗的對我說：「你看見靈降下、停在誰上頭，誰就是那用聖靈施洗的。」我看見了，就見證這一位是上帝所揀選的。』第二天約翰又站着，還有他門徒中兩個人。約翰看着耶穌在走着走着，就說：『看哪，上帝的羊羔！』

有聲音在野地裏呼喊着說：要豫備主的道路，修直他的路徑來。』

他必使許多以色列人回轉歸向主他們的上帝；他必行在主面前為先導，具有以利亞的精神和能力，使為父者的心回轉而向兒女，使悖逆的人回轉、到義人的明達中，為主豫備準備好了的子民。』

這人就是那藉神言人以賽亞所說的，說：『有聲音在野地裏呼喊着說：「要豫備主的道路，造直他的路徑來。」』

他必使父親的心回轉而向兒女，使兒女的心回轉而向父親，免得我來、以毁滅歸神的災禍擊打這地。』

有聲音說：『填高！填高！豫備道路！將絆腳物從我人民的路上拿起來。』

你們要過去，從城門過去，豫備人民的路；你們要填高，填高大路；撿去石頭；為萬族之民立起旌旗。
