And he answered them,“ Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say,‘ Here I am.’ If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?

They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,

When Jesus heard this, he said to him,“ One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.”

If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food,and one of you says to them,“ Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.But someone will say,“ You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe— and shudder!Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;and the Scripture was fulfilled that says,“ Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”— and he was called a friend of God.You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

And he stared at him in terror and said,“ What is it, Lord?” And he said to him,“ Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.

And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord,“ Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.

Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him,“ Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord,begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace.But as you excel in everything— in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you— see that you excel in this act of grace also.I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it.So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have.For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairnessyour abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness.

For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.But Jesus said,“ Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.

And the King will answer them,‘ Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

and said,‘ Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.

For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.
