有士子數人曰、夫子所言善矣、

士子數人曰、先生之言善也、

有經士數人曰、師之言是也、

有經生應曰：『夫子、旨哉爾言。』

Some of the teachers of the law responded,“ Well said, teacher!”

Some of the teachers of the law replied,“ You have spoken well, teacher!”

Then some of the scribes answered,“ Teacher, you have spoken well.”

“ Well said, Teacher!” remarked some of the teachers of religious law who were standing there.

Some of the scribes answered,“ Teacher, you have spoken well.”

Some of the scribes answered and said,“ Teacher, You have spoken well.”

Then some of the scribes answered and said,“ Teacher, You have spoken well.”

And certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well said.

Some of the scribes answered,“ Teacher, You have spoken well.”

Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

Then some of the experts in the law answered,“ Teacher, you have spoken well!”

Some of the scribes answered,“ Teacher, you speak well.”

於是起了大喧嚷，有幾個法利賽黨的經學士站起來力爭說：『我們看不出這個人有甚麼惡呀；萬一有鬼靈或天使對他說過話、可怎麼辦呢？』

有一個經學士聽見他們在辯論，就上前來；他覺得耶穌對他們回答得好，便詰問他說：『誡命中哪一條第一要緊呢？』耶穌回答說：『第一要緊的是：「以色列啊，你要聽；主我們的上帝是獨一無二的主；要將你完全的心、你完全的性命、完全的精神、完全的力量、愛主你的上帝。」其次的是：「要愛你的鄰舍如同你自己」。再沒有別的誡命比這兩條更大的了。』那經學士對他說：『先生，不錯；上帝只有一位，除他以外、再沒有別的上帝；將完全的心、完全的聰明、完全的力量愛他，又愛鄰舍如同自己，是比一切全燔祭和各樣祭祀好的多的：你說的真是對啊。』

但是法利賽人聽見耶穌籠住了撒都該人的口，就聚集在一處；其中有一個人詰問耶穌，試探他說：『先生，律法上哪一條誡命最大呀？』耶穌對他說：『要用你完全的心、完全的性命、完全的精神、愛主你的上帝。這是最大的，又是第一要緊的誡命。其次的也跟這個相彷彿：要愛你的鄰舍如同你自己。這兩條誡命、就是全律法和神言人的教訓所依據的。』
