就在那時，耶穌對眾人說：「你們帶着刀棒出來抓我，如同拿強盜嗎？我天天坐在聖殿裏教導人，你們並沒有抓我。

祭司長和文士聽見這話，就想法子要除掉耶穌，卻又怕他，因為眾人都對他的教導感到驚奇。

他們又來到耶路撒冷。耶穌在聖殿裏行走的時候，祭司長、文士和長老進前來，問他說：「你仗着甚麼權柄做這些事？給你權柄做這些事的是誰呢？」耶穌對他們說：「我要問你們一句話，你們回答我，我就告訴你們我仗着甚麼權柄做這些事。約翰的洗禮是從天上來的，還是從人間來的呢？你們回答我吧。」他們彼此商議說：「我們若說『從天上來的』，他會說：『這樣，你們為甚麼不信他呢？』但若說『從人間來的』，卻又怕眾人，因為大家認為約翰確是先知。」於是他們回答耶穌：「我們不知道。」耶穌說：「我也不告訴你們，我仗着甚麼權柄做這些事。」

耶穌每日在聖殿裏教導人，每夜出城到橄欖山住宿。眾百姓清早上聖殿，到耶穌那裏聽他講道。

過兩天是逾越節，又是除酵節，祭司長和文士在想法子怎樣設計捉拿耶穌，把他殺掉。

耶穌回答他：「我一向都是公開地對世人講話，我常在會堂和聖殿裏，就是猶太人聚集的地方教導人，我私下並沒有講甚麼。

那時，祭司長和百姓的長老聚集在那稱為該亞法的大祭司的院裏。大家商議要設計捉拿耶穌，把他殺掉。

摩西不是傳了律法給你們嗎？你們卻沒有一個人守律法。為甚麼想要殺我呢？」

他們看出這比喻是指着他們說的，就想要捉拿他，但是懼怕眾人，於是離開他走了。

於是，他們又要捉拿他，他卻從他們手中逃脫了。

其中有人要捉拿他，只是沒有人下手。

從那日起，他們就商議要殺耶穌。所以，耶穌不再公開在猶太人中走動，卻離開那裏，往靠近曠野的鄉間去，到了一座城，名叫以法蓮，就在那裏和門徒住下來。猶太人的逾越節近了，有許多人從鄉下上耶路撒冷去，要在過節前潔淨自己。於是他們尋找耶穌，站在聖殿裏彼此說：「你們認為怎樣，他不會來過節吧？」那時，祭司長和法利賽人早已下令，若有人知道耶穌的下落，就要報告，他們好去捉拿他。

「我知道，你們是亞伯拉罕的後裔，你們卻想要殺我，因為你們心裏容不下我的道。我所說的是在我父那裏看見的；你們所做的是在你們的父那裏聽到的。」他們回答耶穌：「我們的父是亞伯拉罕。」耶穌對他們說：「你們若是亞伯拉罕的兒女，就會做亞伯拉罕所做的事。我把在神那裏所聽見的真理告訴了你們，現在你們卻想要殺我；亞伯拉罕沒有做過這樣的事。

耶穌進了聖殿，正教導人的時候，祭司長和百姓的長老來問他：「你仗着甚麼權柄做這些事？給你這權柄的是誰呢？」
