這時候，耶穌對那群人說：「你們帶著刀劍和棍棒出來抓我，就像對付強盜那樣嗎？我天天坐在聖殿裡教導人，你們並沒有抓我。

祭司長們和經文士們聽了，就圖謀怎樣來除滅耶穌。原來他們怕耶穌，因為眾人都對他的教導驚嘆不已。

他們又來到耶路撒冷。當耶穌在聖殿裡行走的時候，祭司長們、經文士們和長老們來到他那裡。他們問：「你憑什麼權柄做這些事？誰給你這權柄，讓你做這些事？」耶穌對他們說：「我要問你們一個問題，你們回答我，我就告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。約翰的洗禮是來自天上，還是來自人間呢？你們回答我！」他們就彼此討論，說：「如果我們說『是來自天上』，他就會問『那麼你們為什麼不相信他呢？』可是我們能說『是來自人間』嗎？」原來他們怕民眾，因為大家都認為約翰的確是先知。於是他們回答耶穌，說：「我們不知道。」耶穌就對他們說：「我也不告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。」

耶穌白天在聖殿裡教導人，夜間出去到那叫做「橄欖園」的山裡過夜。全體民眾清早起來上聖殿，到耶穌那裡聽他講說。

過兩天就是逾越節和除酵節了。祭司長們和經文士們在圖謀怎樣用詭計拘捕耶穌，把他殺掉。

耶穌回答他：「我一向公開地對世人講話。我總是在會堂和聖殿，就是所有猶太人聚集的地方教導人。我沒有在隱祕中講過什麼。

那時，祭司長們和民間的長老們聚集在叫該亞法的大祭司的宅院裡，商議要用詭計拘捕耶穌，把他殺掉。

摩西不是把律法傳給你們了嗎？你們當中卻沒有一個人遵行這律法。你們為什麼想要殺我呢？」

祭司長們、律法師們和長老們知道這比喻是針對他們而說的，就想拘捕耶穌。可是他們怕民眾，於是離開耶穌走了。

於是他們又試圖抓耶穌，他卻從他們的手中脫離出來。

其中有些人想要抓他，可是沒有人下手。

從那天起，他們就商議要把耶穌殺掉。因此，耶穌不再公開地在猶太人當中行事，而是離開那裡，到曠野附近的地方，進了一個叫以法蓮的城，在那裡與門徒們住下了。猶太人的逾越節快到了。許多人從鄉下上耶路撒冷去，要在節日前潔淨自己。他們尋找耶穌，站在聖殿裡彼此談論說：「你們怎麼看，他絕不會來過節吧？」原來，祭司長們和法利賽人早就下令，如果有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就要報告，好抓住他。

我知道你們是亞伯拉罕的後裔。可是你們想要殺我，因為你們裡面容不下我的話語。我所說的，是我從我父那裡所看到的；而實際上，你們所做的，是從你們的父那裡所聽到的。」他們回答說：「亞伯拉罕是我們的父！」耶穌說：「如果你們是亞伯拉罕的兒女，就會做亞伯拉罕所做的事。但如今，我把從神那裡所聽到的真理告訴了你們，你們就想殺我。亞伯拉罕沒有做過這種事。

耶穌進了聖殿，正教導人的時候，祭司長們和民間的長老們前來問他：「你憑什麼權柄做這些事？是誰給你這權柄的？」
