“ Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

“ But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?

Joshua said to the people,“ You aren’t able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He won’t forgive you when you disobey him. He won’t forgive you when you sin against him.Suppose you desert the Lord. Suppose you serve the gods that people in other lands serve. If you do, he will turn against you. He will bring trouble on you. He will destroy you, even though he has been good to you.”But the people said to Joshua,“ No! We will serve the Lord.”Then Joshua said,“ You are witnesses against yourselves. You have said that you have chosen to serve the Lord.”“ Yes. We are witnesses,” they replied.“ Now then,” said Joshua,“ throw away the statues of the gods that are among you. People from other lands serve those gods. Give yourselves completely to the Lord. He is the God of Israel.”Then the people said to Joshua,“ We will serve the Lord our God. We will obey him.”

You will be hated by everyone because of me. But anyone who remains strong in the faith will be saved.

In the same way, you must give up everything you have. Those of you who don’t cannot be my disciple.

Jesus replied,“ Foxes have dens. Birds have nests. But the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

He asked,“ Why are you crying? Why are you breaking my heart? I’m ready to be put in prison. In fact, I’m ready to die in Jerusalem for the Lord Jesus.”

In fact, when we were with you, here is what we kept telling you. We were telling you that our enemies would make us suffer. As you know very well, it has turned out that way.That’s the reason I sent someone to find out about your faith. I couldn’t wait any longer. I was afraid that Satan had tempted you in some way. Then our work among you would have been useless.

“ You don’t know what you’re asking for,” Jesus said to them.“ Can you drink the cup of suffering I am going to drink?”“ We can,” they answered.Jesus said to them,“ You will certainly drink from my cup. But it is not for me to say who will sit at my right or left hand. These places belong to those my Father has prepared them for.”

I think it is right for me to remind you. It is right as long as I live in this tent. I’m talking about my body.I know my tent will soon be removed. Our Lord Jesus Christ has made that clear to me.

Then they said,“ Come on! Let’s build a city for ourselves. Let’s build a tower that reaches to the sky. We’ll make a name for ourselves. Then we won’t be scattered over the whole earth.”But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.He said,“ All these people are united and speak the same language. That is why they can do all this. Now they will be able to do anything they plan.Come on! Let us go down and mix up their language. Then they will not be able to understand one another.”So the Lord scattered them from there over the whole earth. And they stopped building the city.There the Lord mixed up the language of the whole world. That’s why the city was called Babel. From there the Lord scattered them over the whole earth.
